Caravan theatre
Theatre and caravan? Caravan and theatre? Caravan theatre!
It is hard to overestimate the importance of travelling theatre companies in the history of world theatre. Since the beginning of time, this form has demanded imaginative, visual thinking from the performers, but also technical prowess and logistic capability. Today, various solutions are used in Europe, such as old caravans remodelled into mini theatre halls, customised solutions on trailers, or even gypsy-caravan-style old-fashioned theatres on wheels.
In caravan theatres, both form and content are improvised, experimenting with various types of theatre, seeking symbiosis between word, puppet, object, material, and multimedia. We are once again in an era where traveling troupes with caravans move from village to village, city to city, performing at festivals, town squares and fairs, bringing unique and distinctive theatrical art to audiences. Starting from 2024, the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences also has its own caravan – a mini-theatre with a black box style hall, converted from a camper trailer.
The first production in our new mobile theatre is Leino Rei’s adaptation of A. H. Tammsaare’s short story, titled “The Fly, the Cockroach, and the Spider”. The production is suitable for ages 10 and up and lasts 25 minutes.
Our mobile theatre can accommodate up to twelve audience members at a time.
The caravan theatre can also come to you! We are happy to perform at events, festivals, community days, and more. We can even park near a school. We are able to give up to four performances in a row.
